Autism Tasmania exists to make a positive difference to the Autistic Tasmanians, their families, and carers.  In Tasmanian, our volunteers and staff continue to work tirelessly making this difference.  We have 30 years of making a difference and many more to come as we build an inclusive and accessible future for the autism community. Autistic people experience many unfair disadvantages across every part of life, as reported in the Senate Committee Report 2022.  Autism Tasmania’s “Be Open to Autism” campaign is designed to help the community be aware of; understand and accommodate the needs of the Autistic community and approach change from a neurodiversity affirming model.

Learn About Being Open to Autism

There is a lot to do and that means there’s a big opportunity for YOU to get involved as an Autism Ally.  An Ally is a person or organisation that “unites with others to champion a cause for mutual benefit”. An Autism Ally does just that and we urge everyone in our community to get involved.

There are four ways to get actively involved:

  1. Become an Autism Tasmania Member
  2. Be Open to Autism and Champion Community Activities
  3. Donate or Make a Bequest
  4. Fundraise for Autism Tasmania

Become an Autism Tasmania Member

Membership is a great way to get involved and stay connected and up to date with all the news about Autism in Tasmania.  Autism Tasmania has two membership categories:

Be Open to Autism and Champion Community Activities

The following words fit with our values around justice, inclusion, professionalism and collaboration. They mean a lot to Autism Tasmania and why Autism Allies are so important to our work.

“If you want to go far, go together.”

1 in 4 families are impacted by Autism in some way and are experiencing unfair disadvantage for many complex reasons.  There is a lot to be done, however everyone agrees on the two areas that require urgent attention:

  • Increasing awareness, understanding and appreciation about Autism – across the community.
  • Improving routine access to sensory safe spaces – across the community.

We know that our community is curious about Autism and are eager to learn more and to learn how to make a positive difference for the Autistic Community. Autism Tasmania’s Be Open to Autism campaign provides an easy way for community members to connect and to learn more.  Autism Allies play an important role in helping their communities to get involved with Autism. Local connections always work best.

For example, an Autism Ally could champion local community activities such as:

  1. Place Be Open to Autism resources (posters, factsheets) around your communities, workplaces, schools, community centers etc.
  2. Organise a group to sign up to attend an in-person OR online Autism 101 professional learning event.
  3. Coordinate a workplace get together to chat about the Be Open to Autism resources.
  4. Tell us about your community activity by emailing communications@autismtas.org.au either:
    • Before – choose to give us permission to promote your event to the community via our social media and eNews.
    • After – choose to give us permission to share photos and any news with others.

Donate or Make a Bequest

Autism Tasmania is a small not for profit organisation and a registered charity. We rely on donations to supplement our other forms of income such as government grants and fees for our services and the needs of our community are always greater than our capacity.  We encourage the Tasmania community to consider donating to help us continue to our work to improve outcomes for the Autistic community. All donated funds are used for our mission, or for a specific purpose the donor requests.

Even a small amount makes an enormous difference.

YOU can make a difference:

  • $75 will allow one person to be educated about Autism by being sponsored to attend an Autism 101 learning event.
  • $75 will help one Peer & Social event happen by supporting the people who volunteer on weekends and nights to provide connection for others in the Tasmanian autism community
  • $2000 will assist with maintaining meeting spaces across Tasmania for one month

To chat to us about making a donation for a specific purpose or about other elements of donation, please email the CEO: ceo@autismtas.org.au

Your contribution means a lot and helps make a bigger difference to the Tasmanian autistic community. Thank you for your generosity. (Donations over $2 are tax-deductible.)
